OVERVIEW

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin. There are two major forms of vitamin D: D2 (ergocalciferol) and D3 (cholecalciferol). D3 is produced naturally in human skin when expose to ultraviolet B light and more efficient at raising 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels than D2.

Despite being easily synthesized through sun exposure, Vitamin D deficiency is now a global public health concern. An estimated 1 billion people worldwide are affected, with nearly 48% of the population having insufficient levels (<50 nmol/L or <20 ng/mL). Even in sunny regions, indoor lifestyles, use of sunscreen, having dark skin, aging have made deficiency widespread.

WHO MOST AT RISK?

Colleagues Working Together

Working Adults

Feeling tired, moody, or always catching a cold? If you work indoors most of the day and rarely get direct sun, you could be at risk of vitamin D deficiency.
Low D3 levels have been associated with:

  • Fatigue and low energy

  • Mood disturbances and stress sensitivity

  • Reduced immune response

Older Adults

As we age, our skin produces significantly less vitamin D from sunlight—making older adults especially vulnerable to deficiency. This can silently contribute to a range of health issues, including:

  • Poor calcium absorption and bone loss

  • Muscle weakness and reduced mobility

  • Higher risk of fractures and falls

  • Increased risk of depression and mood disorders

Daily vitamin D3 supplementation is often recommended for seniors to maintain bone strength and balance.

Pregnant Women

Vitamin D3 is vital during pregnancy — not just for maternal bone health and immunity, but also for your baby’s development.
Observational studies suggest that low maternal D3 levels may be associated with increased risk of neurodevelopmental concerns, including ADHD.
Ensuring adequate D3 helps support:
•    Fetal brain and skeletal development
•    Maternal bone strength
•    Immune function during pregnancy
